Kingsley Ng (Hong Kong)
Exhibited Artwork: Musical Loom 《

Artist Statement:

The artist's work is usually site-specific inspired upon initial conception - then through different demographic groups that respond to the process and outcome of the art, the context then expands to universal dimensions. It is this conversation that examines the close relationship between art and its context, be it local, regional and/or global. Just as one can witness the wind by the blanket of movement across a meadow field, or see vibrations through a ripple across a mirror of water: the seemingly invisible revealed through this relationship is the aim in the artist's work - to make the forgotten or intangible a perceptible reality.

The original work transformed a 250-year-old antique loom (purchased from the Jacquard Museum of France) into a sound and image instrument. Festival 2007 invited Kingsley to especially create a Hong Kong version of the Musical Loom. With a single-screen projected onto the threads through a mirror, an IR camera and ultrasonic distance sensors are used for tracking. One can play on the threads like a harp and control 4-tone harmony and volumes by the hand's position in midair, generating a mechanical soundscape or malleable musical expression based on their interaction.
