The Safariland Group is one of the world’s major manufacturers of tear gas, and other so-called ‘less-lethal’ munitions. It is owned by Warren B. Kanders, the vice chair of the board of trustees of the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Responding to our invitation to the 2019 Whitney Biennial—and in solidarity with Whitney staff who for months were protesting against Kanders—Forensic Architecture began a project using ‘computer vision’ classifiers to collect and interpret the use of Safariland tear gas.

Working with Praxis Films, we presented a video explaining our methods of machine-learning, synthetic image generation and photo realistic modelling, used in detecting Safariland canisters among the millions of images shared online by activists, protesters, and other allies.

Our research linked Safariland to human rights abuses committed by a wide spectrum of settler colonial, liberal-democratic, and/or authoritarian states. We also exposed Kanders’ connection to the sniper violence committed by the Israeli military against Palestinians in occupied Gaza, through the US bullet manufacturer Sierra Bullets.

On 25 July 2019, after months of protests and a growing artist boycott pushed forward by local anti-colonial and anti-poverty activist groups, Kanders resigned from the Whitney Museum’s board.

This film premiered in New York City in May 2019, after which it was publicly screened in Gaza City at the Palestine Red Crescent Theatre in September 2019.

Artist biography

Forensic Architecture (FA) is a research agency, based at Goldsmiths, University of London. We undertake advanced spatial and media investigations into cases of human rights violations, with and on behalf of communities affected by political violence, human rights organisations, international prosecutors, environmental justice groups, and media organisations. We investigate state and corporate violence, human rights violations and environmental destruction all over the world.

Our work often involves open-source investigation, the construction of digital and physical models, 3D animations, virtual reality environments and cartographic platforms. Within these environments we locate and analyse photographs, videos, audio files and testimonies to reconstruct and analyse violent events. We also use our digital models as tools for interviewing survivors of violence, finding new ways to access and explore memories of trauma. We present our investigations in international courtrooms, parliamentary inquiries, United Nations (UN) assemblies, as well as in citizens’ tribunals and truth commissions. We also present our work in keynote lectures, seminars, publications and exhibitions in art and cultural institutions. We use these forums to reflect on the political and cultural context of our work.
